The Role of IT Leadership in the Ambulatory Setting
Mission:
The importance of ambulatory care in our healthcare delivery system and the need to accelerate the adoption of Information technology continues to be increasingly important for the healthcare industry and HIMSS. HIMSS is dedicated to strengthening its Ambulatory Care Initiative by continuing to work with providers, clinicians, practice managers, communities and the military to identify and demonstrate how Information technology can promote clinical and business integration solutions in the ambulatory care setting.
Purpose:
The Ambulatory Information Systems Steering Committee leads the Society by creating pragmatic resources, tools, and education, on health information technology adoption to improve the quality of care in the ambulatory care setting..
Working with leaders from, medical practices, military health system, community health organizations, large healthcare enterprises ambulatory clinics, consultants and vendors, the Ambulatory Information Systems Steering Committee assists in transforming the delivery of care in the Ambulatory care setting to increase quality and effectiveness of patient care.
The Ambulatory Care Information Systems Committee’s initiatives are focused on; removing barriers to IT adoption, increasing the use of EMR/EHR to improve the quality of care and promote business systems integration in the ambulatory care setting.
Areas of Focus:
The committee is dedicated to growing our membership with representation from ambulatory care experts and promoting the use of information technology to allow for practice transformation by identifying, educating and participating with our members in the areas of;
Leadership
Staff leadership is provided by Mary Griskewicz, MS, FHIMSS, Senior Director of Ambulatory Information Systems. The Ambulatory Care Steering Committee is chaired by Dr. John Maese, President Quality Physician Services, Brooklyn, NY and Gamble Heffernan, Vice President, Misys Corporation.

Community Health Organizations Task Force
Purpose:
This task force will provide a forum for the providers of the nation’s 30,000 Community Health Centers to meet, network, and develop an outreach effort that allows the providers to explore topics of common interest, learn from best practices and provide a collective voice advocating for information technologies for populations at risk.

Business Systems Integration Task Force
Purpose:
This task force will identify and publish best practices in ambulatory business integration; possibilities include practice management systems, systems integration with clinical ambulatory systems, devices and revenue cycle improvements.

Ambulatory Corporate Roundtable
Purpose:
The Ambulatory Corporate Roundtable will provide a forum for our HIMSS Corporate members and Organizational Affiliate participants to discuss and learn about emerging and current issues and trends in the Ambulatory Care setting to specifically address the adoption and use of health information technology. This group will serve as a new benefit for the Corporate and Organizational Affiliate Members.
The Roundtable will also provide co-facilitation between HIS Ambulatory Committee, staff liaison Mary Griskewicz, Senior Director of Ambulatory Information Systems for content and meeting facilitation and Corporate Services, and Organizational Affiliate areas for assistance with corporate member and Organizational Affiliate member outreach, representation and participation.

CMS Announces New Incentive Initiative for Physicians
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) today announced a new initiative for physicians to trade in their prescription pads and improve efficiency and safety when ordering drugs for patients with Medicare. The initiative is included in the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS) final rule for calendar year 2009.
HRSA Awards $18.9 Million to Expand Use of HIT at Health Centers
HRSA Administrator Elizabeth M. Duke today announced almost $18.9 million in grants to health center-controlled networks and large multi-site health centers to adopt and implement Electronic Health Records (EHR) and other health information technology (HIT) innovations.
